: has anyone every build a kayak seat with the blue or pink 2" foam that
: thy sell at home depot or lows? if so how did you do it? thank you marc
Hi Marc,
We have discussed this in the past and I was especially interested in using the Blue foam. I am pretty sure I am going to use it in the ends of my new kayak I am building for flotation. I won’t cover or seal it in so any moisture can just evaporate and also no pressure can build up from the sun as it might if it were sealed in a compartment or fiberglass. Some of the thoughts were that this type of foam would soak up moisture, so I did this experiment. I cut two identical pieces of blue foam, submerging one completely in water for a week and the other left completely dry. Then I weighed them on a gram scales and they weighed exactly the same. So absorption of water is of no consequence. But here is the problem if you make a boat out of it and cover it with a couple layers of fiberglass. When you bump into something you are going to leave a dent. Take you finger and gently press the foam and you will see how easily it dents. A wood strip boat will dent so I believe the foam would dent very easily. When it dents it will delaminate in that dent spot very easily I believe. If you put so many layers of glass on the foam that it becomes tough like a store bought boat then its going to be so heavy that you defeat the purpose of using foam. If you were building a boat for lightness and just for racing then this might be the way to go. I could see a kayak perhaps weighing in at 20 some lbs. Just my thoughts.
