: Ok. I think this is day 30. I have 3 different PC's and sometimes loose track
: of how long I've worked on my boat.

: Yesterday I primed the outside hull and all the seats. I primed with
: Brightsides Gray Primer. Is this stuff thick or what? It covers
: unbelievably well. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what they coat
: Stealth Fighter's with. I used masking tape on the gunwales. I cut 1/3 off
: my foaam roller. That was perfect size to lay the primer. One thing I did
: not anticipate is the strong smell of this primer. I almost killed a
: family of 4 overnight. The boat is in the basement and the stuff was
: rising up pretty well. I opened all the windows in the basement and had to
: open two windows in the bedrooms. Kids dressed up and stayed warm
: throughout the night.

: Because of the opened windows the stuff did not dry really well. It is more
: than 16 hours since I coated this but the paint is still tacky. I will
: wait until tomorrow.

Hi RB,

I had good success keeping the fumes down by opening one window in the basement enough to put a fan in it. The window on the other side of the room I opend a inch or three to allow a clean air source. This would help alot, bot keeping the fumes out of the rest of the house, and keeping the rest of the house warm.

The window with the fan in it, I put cardboard to cover the sections that were not directly behind the fan, to help prevent the fumes from blowing back in.

This should help alot.

I Also used some poly hanging from the ceiling to futher help keep the fumes out, but it is a bit late for you to do that. It keeps the fumes from the cold air return, and the fresh air entry points to the furnace.

In the attached picture you can see how much back pressure I have based on the bellowing of the polly. I'm pretty sure I had my fan on low when I took the picture, but the window accross the room was closed.

This worked so well for me that I could come down stairs 1 hour after varnishing my canoe, smell only the tinyest scent (possibly my imagination?) on the farside of the poly, and nearly get knocked over when I walked into the 'room' with the canoe.

Although the first day I forgot to close the upstairs bedroom window, and some fume were drawn back into the house that way... live and learn.
