Yep, I agree with you Nick. There is not a significant increase in strength. It just offers a solution for those who cannot resist scratching that itch. If you cut your own panels, constructing a joint as you describe would work great and require less sophisticated tools. However, for those building a kit, I don't think a typical lap joint would work because it would shorten the pre-cut panel.
