simple idea maybe:
using a 1 to 10 ratio(halfway between a low 1to8 vs a 1to12), and assuming 3mm ply, i wonder if a typical japanese saw is abt 1mm wide. if one can find a saw similar and offset some 1mm scrap 10mm away from the edge of the blade on bothe sides(hot glue) and another pc of ply over lapping say 20mm. I wonder if a few hand strokes would make the spline?
as the spline is typically in a pc not much more than 4 in or so wide, it may be quite simple,quick and non-threatening to do like using power is. then add 20mm spline in between.
if done on a flat surface, or maybe especially if one used inset mags on the offset like in some of those mitre boxes. other wise a stiff top overlap may be just as good.
