I like the idea of a spline. One could also use a scrap of formica for the fill. I seem to recall that when I put in new countertops that the spine joint used a scrap strip of countertop laminate (formica). I would be quite confident you could get a few scraps to make the spline joint for free (or a few cents) at the local lumberyard or home improvement center.
Would this work?
Maybe some of the kit manufacturers should look at the idea of selling the kits with the spline joint. It could be a big selling point for the ease of construction for first time builders (or any builder). The setup and cutting of the joint is not that difficult.....if you have the right tools.
