I have never applied a saturation coat on any of the S&G kayaks I’ve built. I have found it is better to leave the wood uncoated until I was ready to glass. In order to glue the panels, assemble the hull, and finally set the hull true and fair, the more flexible and lighter the wood is, the easier it was to make the adjustments needed for an accurate assembly.
