: I am almost ready to put the fiberglass cloth on the hybrid kayak that I'm
: building. I plan on using 6 oz cloth on the hull for the durability and
: strength. But I was wondering how much of a weight difference there would
: be by using 4 oz or even 2 oz cloth on the decks. Also, am I mistaken in
: the idea that I don't have to worry as much about the strength on the
: decks, vs the stremgth of the hull. Thanks, Pamela
4 oz. glass alone will dent very easily.
In a rescue situation where you may have to climb onto the deck or pull
someone's boat over your deck to empty their boat, you will probably do
damage to your glass if you've used only 4 oz. inside and out. It's a good idea
to add an extra layer under the deck forward and aft of the cockpit for rescue strenght.
You must add extra layers around the cockpit under the deck to support
your weight entering and exiting the boat if you don't want to damage it.
All the best,
Rob
