Check out Jamestown Distributors. The 1/4" T-nuts were about $1.25 each the last time I bought them. Much cheaper if you buy a box of 100.

$1.25 each isn't really cheap, but it beats $2.99.

Their prices are pretty good, especially if you buy large quantities (boxes, not individual pieces).
