I am building an Arctic Tern 14 on two saw horses. I have followed the all bench threads and looked at all the pictures and I concluded that for S&G, a bench has no benefit and is mostly hindrance. I love the unrestricted access I have to the boat. Any tools I am using I put inside the boat – they don’t get lost and they don’t roll off and I don’t have to search all nearby flat surfaces.

I did have a piece of 3/4 plywood measuring 2 ft by 8 ft that I laid on the floor for making the butt joints and for glassing the bulkheads and some other small pieces. I tried putting it between the saw horses and got rid of it 5 minutes later.

What you really need, workbench or sawhorses, is two cradles that go up to an inch below the shear line. Without the cradles, the rocking will drive you crazy. Just trace the temporary bulkheads (the ones that come with the kit that you will be putting inside the hull) and add 3/16 all around. Don’t bother with the bottom panel lines -- you only need to support the sides -- just extend the side panel lines. A nice touch would be to cut the cradle at a slight angle that matches the shape of the hull. Because you don’t need the cradles until after the hull is built, you can determine that angle easily.
