: Jack,
: I noticed that you and Myrl stripped the decks on your S&G Guillemot all the
: way down to the top of the "side panel". I think it looks better
: than what I did on some small sized models, using the "deck side
: panels" from the plans and stripping to there. But I do think it may
: be easier to use the deck sides and place a sheer clamp along the top to
: attach the deck once it's glassed inside and out. I'm just looking for
: advice one way or the other, or is it just personal preference? I'm
: interested in getting started on a S&G Guillemot hull that I can
: temporarily skin the deck (just like David Ross, I think) so I can use it
: this summer, then stripping the deck next winter. I don't know which way
: I'll do it, deck side panel or not. Any ideas?

HI Scott.
I think it would be much easier to join the deck using a shear clamp. With the guillemot hybrid, however, I think that would mean having only the very top striped, and using the plywood deck side panels.
I thought it would be nicer to have the striped deck end at the top of the side panel. That also left enough ply wood to build a second hull. I had originally thought to build a full S&G boat, so now I have wood for two. I think my second hull will be a boat that will use a shear clamp, I've not yet decided on the design to build, perhaps somthing for touring, or perhaps a guillemot, with the deck side panel.
below is a picture of a modified stitch and glue kayak, from Nick's site. I really liked the look of that one, take a look at how he painted 1/2 of the top side panel. Perhaps somthing like that would be worth working into the kayak, where only the very top is striped. Because the thickness of the strips and the thickness of the plywood are not the same, maybe a 'rub strip' which slopes down from the edge of the strip, and covers part of the plywood top side panel would look good. This rub strip could be planed to smooth the transistion from the striped deck to the side panel. (I may try that if I decide to do a second gullimot hull)
I'm impressed with Jack's boat. I thought it was a stripper, with a painted hull when I saw the picture. Looks great, hope mine turns out as good.
keep us posted on your progress, I'm especiall interested in how you will setup your stations for stripping. If I do mine again, I'll definatley take more time to do that part of the job.
