I'm a builder in southern Calif./Orange County and could probably arrange for you to paddle the Reliance Double I built last winter for some friends down in Vista. They come up to the Newport Back bay to paddle fairly often. I'm also currently building a Redfish Silver for a friend up in Pleasonton abu its still going to be awhile bor it is ready to paddle. I'm going to have both boats at the Southwind Boat builders day on Sat. April 27th. Last year at Southwinds big Demo Day/weekend in June Keith Davis organized a static display of home built kayaks/canoes but the turn-out wasen't great. Keith had two of his boats a Panache and a Georgia Bay based double a friend of Keiths brought a 15ft Strip Canoe and there was an Electric powered Kayak/Dory that was very neat. I'm not sure weather or not Keith will be organizing the same display this year or not. In the past people have arranged short paddling trips to the Newport Back Bay after the Boat Builders event as they are usually very short events and the Back Bay is just a short drive away.
