I have used several of the woods mentioned on my deck. The white plank strips in the deck are Basswood. The Basswood is heavier then the thin White Pine strips edging around the deck planking strips and not any whiter, so I would never use Basswood for a white wood again. I would use pine. The greenish wood plank strips are from Poplar which is also called the Tulip Tree here in Indiana and doesn’t belong to the Aspen family as far as I know. Poplar is also heavy and I wouldn’t use it again except in small quantities. The rest of the wood in the picture is Black Walnut and Western Red Cedar. I did run an experiment soaking Pine for a couple of days in bleach and it did get a little whiter but I don’t think it was worth the effort. I have wondered how white the White Cedar is? I have never seen any and I would have to go out of state to get some.
