: Checked out the results of our first scarf joint gluing last night. Not bad
: for our first attempt. We put together one 45" piece, one 96"
: piece and one 65" piece into one long piece of plywood. One of the
: two joints was quite good - very flush surface. The other one has a good
: bump on about half - perhaps it slid when being clamped. I sanded a little
: but am afraid to do too much for fear of going through the veneer. I think
: I'll call it good enough and move on.
: The most disappointing thing though is how much epoxy soaked through or under
: the masking tape into the wood along both sides of the joint. I didn't
: pre-saturate the wood with epoxy so I suppose that will show up badly on
: the finished product. Any suggestions on how to lessen the effect and how
: to do better on the next three pieces? A different kind of tape perhaps or
: is it going to soak through the wood laterally no matter what you put on
: the top?
packing tape may work better to stop the epoxy from running through, and a quick wipe off of the excess may help stop the wicking in under the tape. However, assuming you are going to fiberglass, I suspect you will not see as much of a line as you think. Once you are done, it will likely be the old scenerio, where it is one of the flaws that you will notice, but nobody else will until you show it to them.
