Just a tip on inlaying from guitar-building.
When you're doing a cutout for an inlay, make the cut with a slight bevel to the outside rather than vertical. Cut out the inlay piece with the same bevel. inlay edge / / cutout edge. That way, the cutout supports the inlay and you'll get better contact between the inlay and the cutout, revealing very little or zero gap as you sand the inlay flush with the surrounding surface.
