The other white wood, umm, other poplar

The other poplar is related to aspens and birches. One common poplar in this group is the cottonwood.

Aspen, cottonwood, and birch would also be nice, tight grained, white woods. Birch is widely used in plywood, and in solid stock for furniture as it takes finishes like paint and varnish very well.
