: I am building a S&G sea kayak like a Chesapeake to my own plan. I am up to
: the stage of building the hatches. Can any one tell me a simple but fairly
: effective way to build them so that they do not leak. I am more concerned
: about the time that it will take and not that it looks beautiful.
: Thanks, Brian White.
Brian,
I built a Chesapeake Light 17 last summer out of a kit. I want to tell you that its been a GREAT boat-good choice. I put in front and rear hatches and as for sealing them up so they don't leak, I used just plain weather stripping that you would find at your local hardware store. Just peel off the back of the strip so the adhesive coating will stick to your hatch. I've found that this does a great job in keep the water out, even in a roll and a heavy downpours. Make sure when you apply the strip so it is continuous with no breaks and you should be ok. It will form to the shape of the hatch. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the new boat!
