:Hi Terry.

I wouldn't be too intimidated...I had to scarf 4mm ply. to make an S&G kayak...not sure, but there might be scarfing instructions at the clc website www.clcboats.com.

I think the recommendation is an 8:1 scarf, so if you are using 1/4" ply, the scarf should be 2". It is easier to cut if you stack the ply, i.e. 1st piece at edge of table, 2nd piece 2" back, 3rd piece 2" back from 2nd, etc. I used a low angle hand plane, like a stanley 60 1/2 or a millers falls 52b(?)...check ebay if you do't have one - about $20-$25 in good condition. Search on "scary sharp" for instructions on keeping the blade sharp.

Two cautions...when it is time to glue the scarfs, put unthickened epoxy on both scarfs 1st...then wait 10 minutes for the grain to suck up the epoxy. Then apply thickened epoxy to the scarfs and clamp, or put a weight on the joint. But not too tight - don't want all the epoxy to squish out.
2nd caution ...nail or clamp the ply in alignment...the epoxy is slippery, and you don't want the wood to shift before the epoxy hardens.

Good luck.
