Dear Lee,
FWIW, I wouldn`t rush out and get a laminate trimmer just for this one job. Unless as Rhed intimated you`re looking for excuses to build up your power tool collection. Not that there is anything wrong with that, either.
One of the many things that I have a hard time with is picturing in my mind what someone is trying to explain in words.
If this is a slot all the way through the panel, could you drill several slightly smaller diameter holes side by side the length of the slot, then clean up the waste with a file?
That`s how I made the slots in my boat for soft padeyes.
