I don't know if this will help you but this is the way I will do this. In the picture you will see the inlay border at the top and bottom with a 5/16" walnut strip next to a 1/16" pine strip. I will glue 3/4" wide pine and walnut strips together then run this 1 1/2" wide strip through the table saw to get the walnut and pine widths. It will be much easier to glue the wide strips together then if I tried to glue the small width strips to them selves I think.
