Thats how I did mine, I stripped the recess to a keyhole shape, then when I made the coaming rim, the pieces where the thigh braces are went on top of the recess. For the keyhole shape I used the offsets given for a West River 18 from an article in Sea Kayaker magazine. Those offsets are also in The New Kayak Shop book.
