: The other thing is pre-coating. This has been a controversal discussion for
: years and many builders change opinions like the wind. Who's boat are you
: building? - who's instructions? I personaly don't believe in precoating
: and find it an unneccessary chore. Many books and professional builders
: don't pre-coat and I imagine there's a few out there that do.

Some simple logic here. Bare wood will absorb resin and glass will absorb resin.

If you coat both at the same time, they will be competing for resin and may well not
get all the resin each needs to be totally saturated.

The glass is the loser. To have a totally transparent glass job the twisted fibers have to
to totally saturated. The resin has to displace ALL the air trapped in the fibers. This
proposition is difficult enough using the thick epoxy resin WITHOUT the added problem
of wood fighting for resin.

Yes, you can coat wood and glass at once. The results may be good enough for your standards.
I noticed trapped air bubbles and sliver fleck in the glass of the boats I did this way, indicating
wet-out problems.

I build boat after boat. Since I've been precoating my wood before glassing the results have been
consistent. The highest transparency of the glass.

In the lights of your shop it is impossible to really see any defects until the boat is varnished
and exposed to the blazing sunlight.

So you can do it either way, but only one way meets my standards.

All the best,
