If you are going to match dots with the same wood on your boat you would want to cut plugs from the same wood, face grained. With a dow you would be getting end grain which would soak up more epoxy and would be darker. I bought a set of 4 plug cutters for around $15 and when I tried to cut walnut they just burned the edge black and smoked. They did cut softer woods. A co-worker I use to work with cut plugs from mahogany that were perfect and matched the wood he pluged so well that he would have me try to find the plug. I have made several attemps this week to find and talk to him about his plug techniques. I will post what I find out when I see him. I suspect he used a very good carbide plug cutter.
