I covered a kayak with 3 oz dacron and agree it is strong considering the thinness of the material. My experience with one barnacle covered rock cut the material along a chine which slowly leaked but the kayak was paddled for another 20 minutes in safety. So yes I'd say for an alert paddler willing to be vigilant at landings and launchings then ultra-light dacron skin boats are fine for known waters. Oh yeah , carry duct tape!
