: I am preparing to epoxy the outside of my Coho hull, and would like to know
: if I should expect any benefit from sanding with a paper finer then the
: 120 grit called out for in the instructions. For most woodworking
: projects, I would end with 320 or 400 - why so course on the hull?
Hi Barry, I know what you mean. The main thing is to remove any tool marks and scratches in the wood; those can show. There are builders who go to the trouble to raise the grain, cabinet scrape... you know the drill. No reason not to go to finer grits if that's what you are comfortable with - the resin will bond to the wood no matter how smooth.
In my experience, scratches in the wood will show through subsequent layers of epoxy. Scratches in the resin will not show through subsequent layers of epoxy.
