Lake waves are usually local wind waves that are moving pretty fast. Short period, and fast. You need some decent hull speed (read: length) to catch these waves. If you're talking about playing in the waves right as they reach shore, you probably don't want a wooden kayak, unless it's a sandy beach.
You can buy an "old" (4 years or older) whitewater kayak with a planing hull, for $3-400.
The Pygmy Arctic Tern 14 is supposed to be a fun little surfing sea kayak.
If you really want an 8' wooden kayak shaped like a whitewater kayak, you can have a lot of fun, but you'll also have to be 'up to the challenge' of designing it, too!!!
