I've got the single speed version of this Porter Cable sander. Used it on four kayaks, a bunch of guitars and it's still going strong. Works great and I really like the way you can attach a hose to it from your shop vac. Really helps with dust control. Smaller hose goes to a reduction fitting that connects to the larger diameter Shop Vac hose. Porter Cable sells the hose as an accessory. I haven't missed the variable speed option. This one would leave you some money left over for sanding disks and supplies ;)
