Mike,
Nice summary of your thoughts and experience. Regarding the Play and choppy water – it is a low volume boat and you will take a little water, but that is like saying “it is a convertible sports car, so you will feel the road”. A couple of weeks ago we were coming back down Tomales bay after the wind had built and the tide was still going out. Taking off on a few waves there was solid water from the cockpit forward. This happens in the surf too, and I love to see the little stream of cavitation breaking off the tip of the bow. But I’ve NEVER felt out of control when it does this, and it never hesitates to pop up and take off. It reminds me of sailing hard down wind in boats that like to surf (not as much of a diver as Merlin).
Your observations on wood and boats are thoughtful and insightful. Two comments: be careful not to focus too much on the low-value properties of any given layer, and keep in mind that as you significantly change one lamina (such as the wood) in a laminate, the overall optimum solution will change. If we were to focus on the low-value properties, unidirectional reinforcements, which are soft and have low strength perpendicular to the fiber direction, would not be used throughout the aircraft, aerospace, and sporting goods industries. Bill Lee made the early design decision to build Merlin with a balsa core/polyester/e-glass sandwich layup – and the boat has done 18 or so races to Hawaii, and probably that many to Mexico. He could have chosen a different system like cold molded wood, and had excellent results just the same.
Enjoy both those boats.
Sam
