John, you're making a good point about the Hook & loop paper and pad. I wore through two H & L surfaces on my DeWalt. I complained to DeWalt and they sent me two free pads. However the rep asked what I was sanding. When I mentioned glass epoxy and glass. He told me never sand glass with a hook and loop. The glass particles will cut the loops and hooks to ribbons in a microscope view and will make it useless. That's what happened to me.

One of the advantages of H & L is it disapates heat, whereas the stick on's will heat up carpenters glue and get gummy. Almnost all pro woodworking shops use stick-ons for the reasons you mention.
