Sam-
Thanks for the info. My wife and I are going to take them out again tomorrow to build some more time and experience.
You point about the sandwich focus is good. I was trying to start from a point that obviously works well (1/4" cedar with 6 oz glass), and work to lighten weight and possibly improve strength by changing the sandwich material. It seems to me if the core can be stregthened, the sandwich wrapping could be lightened, thereby lowering overall weight. This is an area that I am obviously in the learning stages of, and, at any rate, it seems that working with wood is as much art as science.
I am awed when I see an old piece of Shaker furniture that is still as structurally sound as the day it was made nearly two ceturies ago. By choosing wood carefully, using good joinery techniques, and allowing for seasonal moisture movement, they made stuff that lasts.
I figure that the wood in the kayaks we make, if maintained reasonably well, will still be sound in 100 years. I am not so sure if the epoxy/glass will fare as well.
Boeing was slower than other companies in jumping on the composite bandwagon, and as a result the other salesmen could promise better fuel burn specs to prospective customers because the composite stuctures reduced weight. Tragically, the composite tail of a decade-old non-Boeing plane fell off the jet off Kennedy a few months ago. I'm sure it will be awhile until they know what happened, but I don't think an aluminum tail has ever fallen off a Boeing plane under any similar circumstances, and I cannot help but wonder if there is a learning curve to understanding of the fatigue cycling and rheology of these composites, or joinery techniques, or something.
