Some one built a Great Auk with the peak rounded off. I have lost the site but it was a photo of the Kayak and two dogs and some yellow flowers I think. Maybe someone can remember it. I built a Great Auk with the peaked deck and like it a lot. I toyed with the idea of rounding the peak off, but decided to leave it. Maybe on the next one I will. Someone has suggested in the past to use a coffee can for a template to lay off the rounded peak. Go with the cockpit recess. It looks great and gives you a better fit for your sprayskirt. Not that hard to do either.
