Actually, the original concept started with a laser printer, and there was some experimentation done to see if an ink jet printer could also work! It does. For that matter, India ink on tissue paper should work fine, too.

Gil Gilpatrick mentions the laser printer method in his book on strip built canoes, and shows some examples of his logo applied to canoe paddles.

Subsequently people have used laser printer toner as a color tint with epoxy resin and report that it is very compatible.

If you have trouble feeding lightweight paper through your laser printer, you might try attaching a slightly trimmed piece of the thin stuff to a full sheet of regular paper, using small dabs of cellophane tape. Most laser printers have a feed slot for envelopes or card stock which is a relatively straight feed path. Use that. It will take the thicker sandwich of the two sheets of paper (plus the tape) and by not going over a lot of bends you'll be more likely to avoid jams.

Hope this helps.
