The Osprey has a reputation as a very strong tracking boat, so a rudder wouldn't be critical for most paddling. But in this case, especially if one is out with less experienced family members and the wind kicks up to 20 mph, I'd want the rudder so I can pay attention to my family members instead of corrective strokes. If you end up towing someone, you might be glad you've got that rudder, too. The rudder would also come in handy if you've been out for a few hours and the wind kicks up with a strong following sea. I had my Arctic Tern out in high winds, 20mph+ and 2Ft.+ whitecap chop in Sandusky Bay and it handled great, except when paddling downwind with a quartering sea...boy was that a lot of work to keep it on course. Hmmm. Probably be a lot of work in any kayak. Really wanted a rudder at that time. ;)
