: Sam-

: This has been an interesting six months. Combining woodworking and kayaking.
: Like heaven on earth.

: I've still got some thinking to do, but your research was really interesting.
: Do you know of any similar testing with the added variable of wood specie?

: I do think that I will not be able to completely abandon glass due to the use
: (abuse?) I plan on giving these things, but I would like to try to shift
: some resposibility away from glass to wood.

Mike,

I'm not aware of work with other (hardwood) species that could be compared directly. However, most published strength data for wood is determined from bend testing because tensile testing wood is more difficult than for metals or polymer composites. So you can work on your ideas by looking at The Wood Handbook - its available on-line, have you seen it?

I think you are right about not getting completely away from epoxy/glass, if only from the contribution to durability. Conventional plank-on-frame construction needs a lot more work to maintain than a cold molded wood/epoxy boat. One of the reasons that the wood in a typical strip kayak will out last the epoxy/glass is that the epoxy/glass "takes the hit" for the wood. And don't forget that dry wood is stronger than wet wood.
