I second the Merganser 16 for a couple of reasons that have almost nothing to do with performance though the Merganser is a fine boat.

1. Eric the designer of the kayak is a fine fellow very open to helping builders get started.

2. His company Shearwater-Boats produces good designs and I like the underdog when compared to the other plywood kit builders.

3. The Merganser kits can be purchased with a strip deck option which looks gorgeous and will get you started on the way to building a full fledged stripper which is the Platonic ideal of building kayaks anyway.
