Hi Ken .
I've had the same indecision about placement. My bulkhead is 3" foam and is in place only by friction fit,so I can move it back and forth to see how I prefer the placement. So far, things that get stored behind the seat don't get used without getting out of the boat.I do think I'll leave just enough room for a hydration bag but beyond that I'll stow other things elsewhere.
You could fit the bulkhead in with 4-6" of space then add a piece of foam in front if you are concerned about volume in the cockpit.
