: Not to beat a dead horse, but is it possible that the delamination is
: (microscopically, perhaps) initiated by a failure of the core material in
: compression, and that by selecting a core material of greater compressive
: strength that delamination might be posponed until greater deflection
: occurs, and greater strength develops?
Mike,
This horse is pretty well beat-up, but I'll have another go before calling it quits. Whether or not delamination occurred as a result of skin failure, triggered skin failure, or happened after skin failure, we can make a very simple observation: strong wood correlates to strong bend test specimens. So if you pick a wood that is stronger than cedar, you will have bend test specimens that are stronger than cedar specimens.
One final (I promise) comment regarding delamination. The span between end rollers was chosen based on the thickness of the samples. A span to thickness ratio of 16 or greater is considered sufficient to prevent shear stresses, which cause delamination in bending, from playing a major role in the observed behavior. The span we used was 4 inches, and the total specimen thickness was around 0.25 inch or less. So yes, I think that core failure played a role in the delamination.
Sam
