: I have glassed both the hull and deck of my Guillemot-L and I'm just about
: ready to put them together. After the hull was glassed, I tried a test fit
: of the deck and found the hull had flexed out and was an inch or two wider
: than the deck. The deck had just come off the forms so I know the problem
: was the hull. The inside of the hull had only been glassed for a two days,
: so I thought I could squeeze it into the proper shape and hold it with
: reinforced tape until the deck was ready. I inspected the hull and saw
: what appear to be white cracks along the chine caused by the pressure of
: squeezing the hull sides into shape. The cracks run about three feet long
: and appear at the same location on each side. I think I can get the hull
: and deck mated and then go in through the cockpit and put an additional
: layer of glass over the cracks or a fillet of thickened epoxy. The outside
: looks ok. Does this sound like a reasonable fix? I don't think there are
: many other options, but I'd like to hear anyone's advice.
: Also, I had some air bubbles. I filled some using a syringe, but there are
: spots along the edge of the hull where the cloth didn't lay flat. Should I
: cut and sand them out and put on another layer?
If you got signs of stress from bending the hull an inch or so, there was almost certainly some weakness below the glass and you probably would end up with these stress lines at some later date anyway even if the deck and hull had fit perfectly. Almost all the stress lines I have ever seen in the glass I could relate directly to ill fitted strips. You probably didn't get a snug fit between the strips around the chine, they can look tight even when they are not.
The solution at this point is to sand into the stressed glass. Try to remove the stressed glass, but leave as much of the surrounding as possible. Then patch it with two layers of glass, one slightly wider than the area where you sanded into the glass and the other slightly wider than the area where you have sanded through the glass. Before the epoxy cures make sure the hull is the right width. When the epoxy is cured, sand the edges of the glass.
What you do with the bubbles depend on the size and their location. While bubbles of any kind are not "good" small ones will not be a significant problem. If any dimension is longer than about 1/4" you should sand them out and do a similar double glass patch like on the crack above.
