There are very few protected waters in LA and Orange Counties and no camping opportunities on the metropolitan beaches. The harbors are developed with no overnight opportunities. The best kayaking is around the Cannel Islands 20+ miles offshore. So touring here is to get exercise or at most a day paddle. I don’t think there is the draw here that exists in areas that have more touring possibilities.

The majority of the kayaks here are the sit-on-top and are used in the bays that are mostly developed into high-density, high-end housing. I always see more fishing kayaks and float tubes and in the summer SOT rentals than touring kayaks.

It would be nice if sea kayaking caught on more. It would seem with all of the boating interest that is here there would be more interest in kayaking but when it comes down to it I think the ocean athletes have all gone surfing in the warmer water here.

: Scott, any thoughts on why an area of nearly 10million people has gatherings
: of builders that are that small?
