I have also usually used a 3/4" space under the lip. I'm trying a 5/8" space on my current kayak.

Remember, you want to be able to get that skirt back on easily in the middle of a storm, when you're
tired and disoreinted after you've had to climb back into the boat after a rescue.

You don't want to find out you made the space too small when you're in that situation.
