I used a 1/2" lip on my skin boat and it works fine. I think the key is to keep it thin; mine is 1/4". If you use a 3/8" or 1/2" thick lip, the skirt doesn't get as much purchase on it. It's like the difference between the coaming on a molded boat and on a 'glass boat. The latter holds better.
