Pick up a round sole spokeshave for planing concave areas. Otherwise you're spinning your wheels. I ran into the same problem on the sheer clamp of my first boat. Extending the blade of your block plane won't help in my experience.

I doubt there's anything wrong with your block plane; block planes "want" to cut. I've had problems with my other planes but not my lower angle planes. You can quickly test it by planing the edge of a regular board... works fine right?

Try the spokeshave, they are easier to use than most people think. The long handles make it easy to eyeball angles correctly.
