I used a 1/2" deep lip that's 3/4" above the deck. There's plenty of space for the rand on the spray skirt. Sorry for any confusion.

Lee's comment about "some British boats" is right on the mone. The coaming on the Norkapp and the Silhouette are low enough in spots to make it difficult to get the skirt on at times. A skirt with a thick rand would not fit.
