: No, no, no, Chip. Not the POWER sharpening system. The manual one or honing
: guide. That would be major overkill, not to mention not in my budget. :-)

I find that using a grinder to put a hollow grind on blades and chisels significantly reduces the time needed to sharpen tools. With a hollow grind you don't have to sharpen the whole bevel, just the cutting edge. I rigged up the Veritas grinding jig to my grinder. The jig helps to hold the blade so that you can get a parallel grind across the cutting edge. I use a honing guide to hold the chisel or plane blade when sharpening. I start on each side of a combination water stone then finish with 1500 grit and 2000 grit sandpaper attached to a piece of glass. Off the grinder, I can sharpen the blade to shave hairs in about three minutes. It also helps to flatten the water stones after about 3 sharpenings. They don't cut as well when they start to dish. I've gotten good results flattening the water stone using a diamond hone or drywall sanding screen taped to glass.
