: I just started constructing a pygmy Tern 14 and the instructions said to make
: a glue out of wood flour and resin. Furthermore, it said that the mixture
: should be the consistency of honey. I then read the System Three Epoxy
: book and they indicated that the glue should be non-sagging
: (Thixotropic?). Maybe I am splitting hairs here, but isn't honey too
: viscous to be non sagging?
Hey Ray
You have to remember that those East Coasters like their honey and syrup thick enough to cut with a knife. Try mixing it the consistancy of Peanut Butter, Jif Brand, Creamy.... and see how that works. You want it to spread real easy and stay where you put it but not so dry that is rolls or flakes up and leave it rough. You can use flour or a lighter saw dust to lighten the color to match your original wood color if you need. Just remember that your wood will darken as well when epoxy is used over it. Just like wetting it will any finish. Wipe an area or a scrap piece with a damp rag and that will give you a good idea of the finished color to match to. I did this and found the color amd sawdust ratio I wanted and them mixed up a quart jar with the sawdust mix for the whole boat. Then poured that into a gallon zip-lock bag to have ready when I needed it. That way I didn't have to test and compare with every batch. Might take more than one quart of sawdust, so make more if you can.
: Does anyone have the ratio of wood flour to mixed resin that has worked well
: as an adhesive?
You can start with around 50/50, but it sometimes takes more sawdust or flour. Make a small batch of a couple of tablespoons and see just how far you need to go, and match your color as close as possible at the same time.
: Also, I am using epoxy pumps supplied with the kit. Can I assume that they
: are fairly accurate and will dispense the proper amounts of resin and
: hardener (restrictor installed on hardener pump)?
Some do, but I wouldn't. If you want, just pump into a measured container and check. Get into a habit and you will get to know your proportions after a while. If you just use the pumps, and one of them burps, your mixture is off, and by how much???? will you want to take a chance and guess?? I'd measure it with something you can SEE. Hope that helps!!
