: It's VERY tough to find these materials in the Bay Area. Ditto quarter sawn
: stock. I've found WRC and Yellow Cedar here. I've not found Spruce at all
: ... I didn't look too hard though ... but I hear rumors a place on the
: peninsula has it. I can find loads of Redwood but nothing clear. I hear
: clear Redwood is available in Fresno ... Rhed can prolly give you a lead.
: For WRC and Yellow Cedar try Beronio Lumber in San Francisco. I've bought air
: dried WRC 3 times in the last year there. The quarter sawn stuff was about
: 1 plank out of 15 ... plank length was 8', 10' and 12' ... nothing longer
: available ... it's affordable. The stuff I found was primarily of the
: light colored variety although I was barely able to score a few planks of
: the dark stuff for trim. They stock flat sawn 3/4" KD WRC in the
: light color variety ... expensive ... it's in the building they do their
: mill work in. I've found flat swan 5/4 KD WRC of the dark variety in the
: main warehouse ... I think the lenghts were less than 10' and the stuff
: was expensive. They've always had KD Yellow Cedar in the main warehouse.
: As I remember there was a good variety of lengths to choose from, most of
: it was 2" nominal stock ... seemed a little knotty though ... you'll
: have to scrounge to find the clear stuff.
: A friend of mine scored some of the dark colored variety of WRC at Truitt and
: White in Berkeley. I dunno any more if the specifics.
: You'll prolly have to hit the yellow pages for more leads. These woods seem
: to be in spotty supply here. Don't forget to hit some of the boat
: specialty wood places and restorers. Ditto aircraft places for spruce.
: Hope this helps!

Hey Scott, Ken...
Hey Dudes, you don't want to be messin' with my evil twin "Rhed". You never know where he's comin' from and he'll surely lead you astray... Rehd
As for Redwood, there is one really good place in town here that stocks redwood, in the Clear-Heart and B grades, but it sells like platinum!! It's absolutely clear, Heart wood and is kiln dried, very light weight, easily matched, uniform color, but, may not be what you are looking for. ?? Kiln dried lumber is proned to be difficult to bend (brittle) without steaming. Moisture tends to discolor redwood ( stains it from the acids in the wood ).
Sitka Spruce is very rare in these parts. Only one shop I know that gets it and they have a very small supply. Short lengths.
I would try MacBeath lumber up in Berkeley for their supply. They have a good supply of Marine plys and I would guess a good supply of other materials. Last I checked they had some good prices as well. They have a Web-Site but can't remember the exact URL. There's a fella building and paddling up there that would know more about that.... Val Wann... You might search his email address on the site and send him an inquiry. He's been pretty helpful to others up that way.
If not MacBeath, then you can order some excellent quality products from Penberthy lumber down in L.A. They do phone orders and mail orders and ship about anywhere. Many of the Boat and Homebuilt Aircraft builders in this area swear by them. They do have Sitka Spruce. They have a web-site as I recall, but it was down, under construction, last time I checked.
If you are still interested in the Kiln Dried Redwood Clear Heart, you can contact: Fitzsimmons ~ White Pine Lumber here in Fresno. (559) 222-6201
Just put your knee braces and hard hat on when you ask for the prices. lol
I will be using the Redwood C.H. on my Great Auk as there are no real serious bends on this one and should be very easy working without steaming.
Hope this helps!!
