: The UV inhibitors in varnish serve two purposes. It protects the varnish, and
: more importantly, it protects the epoxy and wood beneath it. I would be
: concerned that an automotive clear coat would not provide the same
: protection to the epoxy and wood. While it may have UV inhibitors to keep
: the clear coat clear, that does not mean it needs to protect the paint
: under it in the same way varnish does.

Not being much a fan of the amber color of varnish either, I found reference to the Interlux 2-part polyurethane used by One Ocean kayaks on recent boats. Appears super-glassy, no amber overtones, and claims to provide good UV protection. Another plus (at least in my view) is that I could deal with subsequent touch-up on my own - not having to take it in to have an automotive coating re-sprayed seems advantageous.

One Ocean now has images of their new S & G Cirrus on-line (see "Gallery" section), which was coated in the Interlux product.

F.Y.I., Interlux has changed the name from "Interthane Plus" to "Perfection Varnish." I've got some on-order now, but have no direct experience with it yet.
