I built some J cradles leveraging some of Ross Leidy's ideas. They're worth the hassle when you have a whole bunch of boats to load and you want to isolate your wood boat. On the other hand, because of the extra height, I find them a hassle to use, and only use them when necessary. Otherwise my boat gets loaded on edge up against the upright, just like it's plastic siblings.

In this picture, I had a total of 5 boats on the rack (can't see the two short whitewater boats that we took along to play in the surf). As you can see, the roller setup on my friend's truck limits him to 2 boats, while I can handle up to six. Hope that helps.
