Hello Lee,
This photo was taken in the high school shop in Neah Bay, Washington (Makah Indian reservation). After having visited with Bill Monette, the high school shop teacher, I came away feeling that canoe building is about 95% of the shop program at this school (the other 5% being comprised of the obligatory chess boards and cutting boards). This is all understandable as the Makah have a rich history of whaling and canoeing - this program is one way in which they are attempting to instill and retain some of this heritage in their younger members.
