: Hi there, all.
: I've been invited again to make two presentations at the upcoming R2K
: get-together in Port Townsend in August.
: Topic #1 will be on Stitch & Glue Basics.
: Topic #2 will be a fiberglassing demonstration, i.e., wetting-out a smallish
: example of a compound-curved hull section.
: This year, I'd like to solicit suggestions from you-all about what should be
: covered, emphasized, or ignored, for that matter. Please keep in mind that
: each will only be about an hour long, so it won't be like a real 'how-to'
: course.
: For me, the hard part has always been to cram as much as I can into that
: hour, so I'm aware that I have to skip over a lot of details. Since this
: is for the benefit of the audience (rather than myself, as I pretend that
: I know the material) I'd like to get a better idea of what is desired, and
: tailor it thusly. Hand-outs? Mock-ups? Samples of different glass/epoxy
: layups? Favorite tools? Custom work? The great Roller vs. Brush vs. Pour
: & Squeegee Epoxy Application debate? Pygmy vs. CLC? Does this make
: sense?
: In any event, suggestions and responses here or via my email eddress (as
: above) will be much appreciated. Don't be shy, now, we were all beginners
: at some point, so don't think your question will sound too stupid. If I
: remember correctly, my first kit remained in its boxes for some months
: while I lurked here trying to get up the courage to actually build a boat
: I was going to trust my life to.
: Hope to see you all there, August 16-18.

Hi Pete
Would be nice to see and talk to you again this year, and my friends Pat and Jay feel the same way. Jay enjoyed your demo and talking with you later. He asked me to give his regards when next we spoke.
We however won't be able to get up that way this year for numerous reasons
( both financial and medical ).
I know this would put a Pre-Show burdon on you, but how about making a few samples of problems that some folks have and tag them with reasons and fixes. This would be something you could just lay out on a table and let folks look at themselves.
ie; "Blush", "Fisheyes", "Orange Peel", "Sanding into Weave", "Trapped Bubbles" and maybe a few more.
Maybe a sample of a proper wetout, squeegied off to the grain and not puddled or smooth.
Maybe a sample piece with "Wetout", "First Fill Coat", "Second Fill Coat", "Third" and so on.
Also, for those using door-skins maybe someone has some small pieces with voids that can be shown and explained.
I agree that the demos are basically for newbies or the less-experienced so you should make the demos fairly simple and to the point and you can make reference to the samples during your epoxy/glass demo, but for the most part they would just sit aside and not take up your time at the show.
This may be something you can get some help with before the show from local folks or those close by. ???
I use the "Dump & Squeegie" method myself and find that there is no reason to panick doing it this way with a slower hardener ( for beginners ), or fast hardener with experience.
I really enjoyed your demos last year and got some good info. out of them, as well as the questions asked and answered during them. Thanks again for your time donated to the cause, as well as others with their demos.
