Ken
I built a canoe about 4 years ago, and I told my brother I was going to use Durham Water Putty and he laughed at me. But that is what they told me to use so I bought the biggest can I could find and my brother still laughed at me...in fact he came over to watch me apply it. I mixed up a big batch and applied it to the hull. Big mistake. My personal opinion about this stuff is you might as well be using drywall mud. I found that it mixed up very white and when I wasn't happy with the end result, I tried to remove it from the hull. It was very, very hard and basically came off like oh sanding dry wall. I then tried to use some DAP putty to match the wood. It matched very well, in fact, I was sold on the stuff. But when I applied the seal coat to the hull, the DAP started to come through the epoxy. At this point I wasn't concerned though. It was when I laid-up the glass, the DAP came through every coat of epoxy but the last one. After the episode on the outside of the hull, I tried using wood glue mixed with sanding dust. The problems I had with that is it would shrink up requiring several layers of the stuff.
This is what I use.
On the outside, I use sanding dust from balsa wood mixed with epoxy.
On the inside, I use sanding dust from the cedar mixed with epoxy. The reason I don't use the cedar on the outside is it will turn too dark on you and stick out like a sore thumb.
